Following his a list of community outreach programs that Women Who Care is involved in and some references for services that Women Who Care recommends:
Community Outreach Programs:
- Wahine Ho'opa'a - Women Who Care is currently partnering with The Neighborhood Place of Wailuku in a Family Strengthening Program. 16 participants will spend 8 weeks in selected programs which will assist them spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically.
- No HPV Vaccine for Immigrants - Women Who Care, when approached by The National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum , signed on to a letter petitioning the Center's for disease control to oppose the newly-imposed requirement that female
immigrants ages 11 to 26, seeking permanent residence or entry to the U.S. be immunized against the human papillomavirus (HPV).
- The BIRTH Play - Women Who Care sponsored the play BIRTH, written by Karen Brody, at the historic Iao Theatre in Wailuku in September of 2007. This performance empowered and impacted many. After the second performance a landmark group of Doctors, Nurses, Midwives and Doulas were brought together in a panel to discuss the play and to determine how they could work together towards Mother Friendly Birth on Maui.
- Lahinaluna High School - Women Who Care had a very inspirational talk with a small but mighty group of highschool teenagers which included pregnant and new moms. As a result, one of the young ladies who was pregnant and was sure she wanted pain medication is now going to try without it. They couldn't wait to tell their friends about what they had learned.
- Women Who Care has a representative on the Breastfeeding Task Force at the Maui Memorial Medical Center. This group is instrumental in having babies brought right to the mother after birth and giving them some skin to skin time(for non-emergency deliveries) before wrapping the baby and doing baby checks.
- After the Birth play in 2007, there was an historic "Bridge Committee" formed which includes Doctors, Nurses, Midwives and Doulas. Their purpose is to bridge the gap between Midwives and Doctors and make hospital transports smooth. Women Who Care has a representative on this committee.
